Immediately after enumerating the ‘8 models of interactivity (as I see them),’ Coupland gives his favoured microserf, Dan, a comment on the book, ‘I wonder if we oversentimentalize the power of books.’ For, strangely, Coupland’s speculations on culture and society (as modulated by the geekspace of his microserfs), and, even more pointedly, the SF spells of Gibson’s near-future worlds are brought to readers in the form of conventional novels, (paperback) codexes, holding narratives where the risks of fragmentation, structurelessness and pointless repetitions have been minimized by the implicit reading strategies of late-literacy.
