(A word of explanation for those not familiar with the concept of fractal geometry: recent work by Mandelbrot, his colleagues and students suggests that the mathematical regularities of much of the natural world are not integer- dimensional, but of dimensionalities which can be expressed as fractions of whole numbers. So what is being suggested here is that the synthesizing ego tends to reduce these fractal spaces to integer-dimensional spaces - commonly two- or three- dimensional spaces - in order to bring them into consciousness. This, we suggest, is explained by the geometry of phenomenological space.)
