| Final Project |
Your History and Theory of Digital Art final project will be an experiment in creating a print object out of digital source material. This print object will be a collaborative book produced in class on November 28th with visiting artist Antonia Pinter who is also the co-director of the Portland-based publisher Publication Studio. Please note: the workshop will take place on November 28th but the project will not be complete until the following day November 29 just before Antonia leaves to fly back to L.A. You must start preparing your contribution to the final project now. Your project can consist of text, image or some combination thereof. Here are some initial technical parameters for how the material should be created:
text: .RTF file If you have a physical work that you want to experimentally scan into an image that you then include in your contribution, bring that scan with you as a PDF or other image file. Your contribution should be at least six but no more than ten pages. In addition to your contributions to the collaborative project, your final will consist of one final blog post that addresses these questions: What are some differences between the exchange of digital material vs. print material? For example think about sending someone a PDF or an ebook, both parties still possess the work, but when I give someone a physical book I no longer possess that book. What are the differences of the evidence of reading a book or a PDF? What are some properties of the underlying structures of print vs. digital: code vs. ink and paper? How does the basic structure of the format change the content? What is the value assigned to print (think about preciousness) vs. that of a digital book or work of art? Who has access to print? Who has access to digital—what are the implications of art in digital form vs. print form in terms of accessibility? How does your work address both digital and print? Does it connect to one or the other or does it converse with both, link one to the other and make a loop? How does your work address the page that it will be printed on? The sequence of the book format? Does your work change when you print it out? Can it be printed? Or does printing it inherently lose or obfuscate the information? Here are some links to books (or book-like projects):
