how can we
even begin to consider a national information infrastructure when we can't
even get our act together transportationally? the hypertextual labyrinth
that makes up
the aviational composition of the US airspace and the sorry state of our
train service, lead us to believe that what's missing most in the
contemporary american landscape is a fully integrated network of
alternative modes, alternative that is, to the dead
weight of the killer automobile and its grotesque excuse as a way to
corrupt our passage from one imaginative-living space to another. a more
pervasive psychogeographical city-without-cars, one that is made of
digitally composed mobile-code as experience
d in the virtual worlds of cyberspace, will only be useful if we have a
concomitant national train-bike-bus infrastructure that enables the
geographically-inclined nomadic-cyborg to remain engaged & ready to produce
advanced works of art that evolve a more
creative "infrastructure itself," one that takes care of the
transportation of human bits of data (nomadic DNA forever reconstituting
itself as the ever-expanding narrative environment -- the body of the story
shifting into multilinear narrative realities
).
what is "infrastructure" anyway? is it the life blood of the
network? how can we daydream information superhighways while tar-drenched
road-trip highways discourage the use of alternative modes of transport?
should we appropriate the manic code-language
of Futurism and celebrate the sexual becoming of automotive speed so as to
reassure our collaborators of our inability to produce cyborgian power
ourselves? decay has a way of growing, like a virus, as the common
metaphor goes. the virus manifest
s itself in ways we can't imagine --- one crank phone call to the air
control traffic tower in the busy new york tri-state area and the entire
infrastructure starts coming apart at the seams. flights rerouted back to
their points of destination, "liquid"
corporate enterprises (i.e. the airlines) refusing to put the distraught
and disabled passenger in a hotel for the night since they can't be held
responsible for terrorist bomb threats (or acts of God, whoever/whatever
that is)...
senatorial kingpins playing up porn bomb threats on the
Net are just as ludicrous and part of an overall tendency to protect
ourselves from ourselves. we can hear it in the rising high-pitched voices
of the conservative conspirators who are afraid to be human when the world
dem
ands optimum cyborgian humanness. when the government closes down and goes
into default on its enormous debt causing foreign investors to get the
eco-jitters and pull their support in the bond market, what sort of chaos
will ensue and who will rise to power? will he who rises to power be able
to control the vast network of cyborgs inventing the Net? no. but what
will he do to try and stop us?
